Mahama Urges Economic Advisory Group To Be Frank, Independent And Evidence Driven

President John Dramani Mahama has charged members of Ghana’s newly formed Economic Advisory Group to give frank, independent and evidence-based advice to government as the country works to strengthen its economy.

Speaking at the launch of the advisory group’s first meeting, Mahama said the nation needs sound economic guidance that is not influenced by political bias or short-term interests. He stressed that the group’s role is vital in helping policy-makers make informed decisions that support long-term growth and stability.

Mahama noted that Ghana is facing complex economic challenges that require clear analysis and honest feedback. He urged members to use accurate data, practical research and global best practices to guide their recommendations. According to him, the group should help ensure that policies reflect real conditions on the ground and benefit all Ghanaians.

The former president also highlighted the importance of independence in the group’s work. He said advisers should feel free to express differing views without fear or favour, and should always prioritise the national interest over narrow agendas. He urged them to ensure their work is rooted in facts and solid evidence rather than assumptions or speculation.

Mahama’s comments come amid ongoing efforts to steer Ghana’s economy toward sustainable growth. Key areas of concern, according to economic experts, include inflation management, revenue mobilisation, job creation and strengthening key sectors such as agriculture and industry. The advisory group is expected to support policy-makers in addressing these and other challenges.

He also emphasised the need for the group to communicate its findings clearly to both government and the public, encouraging transparency and broad understanding of economic choices facing the nation. By providing robust analysis, Mahama said the group can help build public confidence in economic policy and national development goals.

In closing remarks, Mahama thanked members of the advisory group for accepting the responsibility and encouraged them to maintain high standards of professionalism in their work. He said the future prosperity of Ghana depends on well-informed policy decisions supported by accurate data and deep economic insight.
