Why Many Ghanaian Men Refuse To Use Condoms Ghana AIDS Commission Reveals
The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has released information explaining some reasons why many Ghanaian men are reluctant to use condoms despite their importance in preventing sexually transmitted infections including HIV.
According to the Commission, one common factor cited by men is that condoms distributed through the public health system are perceived as too small and therefore uncomfortable to use. This concern about size has discouraged some men from using condoms consistently.
The GAC has emphasised that condoms remain one of the most effective available tools for reducing the spread of HIV and other infections when used correctly and consistently. However, declining condom use and avoidance, especially among young adults, continue to raise concerns for public health officials who are trying to reduce new HIV infections.
Health experts say that this avoidance of condoms can be influenced by a mix of personal preference, myths, and practical concerns like comfort and fit. They also point out that changing attitudes toward HIV because of better treatment options may reduce fear of the disease among some groups, making people less likely to take protective measures.
The Commission has called for continued public education and efforts to improve access to a variety of condom sizes and options so that more people feel comfortable using them. It also stresses the importance of promoting responsible sexual health choices including abstinence or mutual faithfulness for those who choose not to use condoms.
Officials say addressing these barriers and concerns could help increase condom use and support Ghana’s broader goal of reducing new HIV infections and improving sexual health outcomes nationwide
