President Mahama Expresses Strong Displeasure Over Alleged Transit Diversion Scheme At Borders
President John Dramani Mahama has reportedly reacted with deep concern after receiving a briefing on an alleged transit diversion and revenue evasion scheme involving the movement of goods across Ghana’s borders. The disclosure was made by Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister for Finance, while speaking to media.
The matter came to light after the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) intercepted several articulated trucks at border posts that were declared as carrying transit goods from Akanu purportedly destined for Niger via Kulungugu.
Initial checks by authorities uncovered alleged irregularities, including the movement of these goods without the required customs human escort, which is a key control measure for legitimate transit cargo. This breach has raised serious concerns about possible internal complicity and weaknesses in border control mechanisms.
Deputy Minister Ampem said that when officials returned from the border inspection, the President was waiting for an immediate briefing and made clear his displeasure with the situation. “He was so upset,” Mr Ampem said, adding that anyone found to be involved in the alleged scheme would not be treated leniently.
The government has emphasised that its aim is to protect national revenue and uphold the integrity of border enforcement. While some officers may be implicated, Ampem noted that there are also customs personnel who acted professionally and helped uncover the irregularities. These officers, he said, would be recognised for their integrity.
Ongoing investigations are expected to determine individual responsibility as authorities work to strengthen oversight and prevent revenue leakages along the borders.
