DKB Says He Was Once Set To Join NPP Before Mahama Changed His Mind

Ghanaian stand-up comedian Derick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB, has revealed that he once planned to join the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but changed course after being influenced by the leadership of John Dramani Mahama. The comments come as DKB addressed his personal political journey and the events that shaped his views ahead of recent public debates.

In a video shared online, DKB said he was once groomed to become a member of the NPP and that his involvement in a high-profile activism event during the 2015 power crisis protests was not rooted in opposition to former President Mahama but rather in his early political orientation. He explained that he later found himself aligned with different ideas and that Mahama’s leadership appealed to him in a way that changed his political outlook.

The entertainer clarified that although he was exposed to opportunities and encouragement to move in the direction of the NPP during his early career, his personal beliefs and experiences eventually led him to reassess that path. DKB said that his perspective shifted after engaging with issues more deeply and considering what he felt best reflected his values and aspirations for Ghana’s future.

DKB’s comments have sparked conversation among followers, with many praising him for being candid about his political evolution and others debating the role of entertainers in political discourse. His story highlights how personal experiences and reflections can shape political views over time, moving beyond simple party loyalty or early influences.

He has emphasised that his engagement in public issues is rooted in his desire to contribute positively to national conversations rather than merely endorsing any particular figure or party. DKB said that he believes Ghanaian artists and public figures should be thoughtful and informed when expressing their opinions on political matters, and that his own journey reflects that commitment.
