The Historical Story Behind Why Ghana’s Military Headquarters Is Called Burma Camp

Burma Camp, the main headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces located in Accra, carries a name deeply rooted in military history that dates back to the colonial era and the Second World War. Today the camp serves as the central command base for Ghana’s army, navy, and air force, as well as the Ministry of Defence.

The origin of the name “Burma Camp” is linked to the Burma Campaign of the Second World War, a major military operation fought in Southeast Asia between Allied forces and the Japanese army. During that war, thousands of soldiers from the British West African colonies, including those from the Gold Coast, were deployed to fight alongside Allied forces in Burma, which is now known as Myanmar.

The West African troops, including members of the Gold Coast Regiment, played a significant role in the campaign and earned recognition for their bravery during the conflict. When the soldiers returned home after the war, the military establishment in Accra was named in honour of their service and sacrifice in Burma. The name therefore became a lasting reminder of the contribution made by West African soldiers during the global conflict.

Before it became known as Burma Camp, the military base had a different name during the colonial period. It was previously called Giffard Camp, named after General Sir George Giffard, a British military commander who served as the General Officer Commanding in West Africa during the early 1940s and later led Allied forces in the Burma theatre of war. After Ghana gained independence in 1957, the camp’s name evolved into Burma Camp to commemorate the historic military campaign.

Over the decades, Burma Camp has grown into one of the most important military installations in Ghana. The camp houses several military units, training facilities, and institutions that support the operations of the Ghana Armed Forces. It also hosts educational institutions and residential facilities for military personnel and their families.

Beyond its operational role, Burma Camp holds historical significance in Ghana’s political and military history. The location was involved in several major events, including periods of military rule and political upheaval in the country’s past. As a result, the camp has long been associated with the authority and power of Ghana’s military establishment.

Today, Burma Camp stands not only as the command centre of Ghana’s armed forces but also as a historical monument that reflects the country’s military heritage and the role Ghanaian soldiers played in global conflicts many decades ago.
