Daycare Staff Shares How They Saved Children During Tema Helicopter Crash
Staff at a daycare centre in Tema Community One have shared how they managed to protect children during the helicopter crash that occurred on March 16, 2026.
According to a staff member who spoke after the incident, most of the children were asleep when the crash happened near the facility.
The official explained that the sudden noise and impact caused panic, but caregivers acted quickly to ensure the safety of the children. Staff immediately rushed into the rooms, woke the children and began moving them away from the danger zone as smoke and fire spread from the crash site.
The daycare workers said their first priority was to remain calm and prevent the children from becoming frightened. They quickly organised the evacuation, guiding the children out of the building and relocating them to a safer area away from the wreckage.
Some of the staff also ensured that all children were accounted for during the evacuation process. They checked sleeping areas and classrooms to make sure no child was left behind as the situation unfolded.
The incident occurred when a small aircraft crashed near the daycare facility, killing two people on board. Emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, arrived shortly after to control the situation and secure the area.
Despite the proximity of the crash to the daycare centre, no child or staff member was injured. The swift response of the caregivers has since been widely praised by members of the public.
Staff members described the experience as frightening but said they were relieved that all the children were safe. They emphasised that teamwork and quick thinking played a key role in preventing what could have been a more tragic outcome.
The incident has sparked discussions about emergency preparedness in schools and childcare centres, with many calling for improved safety measures and training to handle unexpected situations.
