Accra High Court Defers Ruling in Dispute Over Release of Daddy Lumba’s Remains
The Accra High Court has postponed its ruling on an application aimed at preventing the release of the remains of celebrated highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as Daddy Lumba. The court took this decision after hearing arguments from both the applicants and respondents involved in the family dispute.
The application was filed by representatives of Daddy Lumba’s maternal family, who argue that they hold the rightful traditional and legal authority to take custody of the late musician’s body. They maintain that under Akan customary law, funeral responsibilities and decision-making power rest with the maternal lineage, making them the appropriate custodians of the body and funeral arrangements.
After reviewing submissions, the presiding judge adjourned the matter and announced that the ruling will be delivered on Friday, December 12, 2025. This anticipated ruling is expected to clarify who legally holds the mandate to take possession of the remains, coordinate the funeral processes, and administer any related memorial activities.
Speaking to the press after the court session, a representative for the first defendant, Kweku Emmanuel Debrah, emphasized the family’s respect for the judicial system. He noted that the family remains committed to unity and will fully comply with the court’s final decision.
Highlife musician Papa Shee, who appeared in court to support the applicants, expressed confidence and optimism as the parties await Friday’s ruling.
