Accra Mayor Provides Tools and Start-Up Capital Worth Over GH¢300,000 to 88 Persons With Disabilities

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has presented working tools and financial support valued at more than GH¢300,000 to 88 persons with disabilities (PwDs) in the Accra metropolis as part of efforts to promote economic inclusion and empowerment.

The support package, which totals about GH¢313,919.40, included both equipment and start-up capital. Recipients comprised 50 males and 38 females living with various forms of disability, including physical, visual, hearing, intellectual and multiple disabilities.

Items distributed to the beneficiaries included deep freezers, refrigerators, fufu and popcorn machines, sewing and knitting machines, a high-pressure washer, an electric wheelchair, hearing aids, and a laptop. A number of recipients also received GH¢3,000 cash support each to help them start or grow small businesses.

While presenting the tools and funds, the Mayor stressed that disability is not a choice and that persons with disabilities are equally capable of contributing to development if given the right support. He said inclusion is a responsibility, not charity, and indicated plans to work towards policies that would help PwDs secure employment opportunities within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

The initiative forms part of broader inclusion and empowerment efforts by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to ensure that persons with disabilities can participate more fully in economic activities and enjoy dignity and independence.
