Achimota School Launches First Inter-School Alumni Tennis Competition
The Achimota School community recently celebrated a successful inaugural Inter-School Alumni Tennis Competition, bringing together former students from several leading Ghanaian secondary schools to compete, reconnect, and honour old sporting traditions.
The one-day event was held at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday, January 31, 2026, with activities beginning at 8 a.m. as part of a broader calendar of events marking build-up activities to Achimota School’s centenary celebration in 2027.
Organised by the Old Achimotan Association (OAA), the competition aimed to revive the historic Triangular Games, a popular inter-school sporting fixture that brought together top schools in Ghana in the 1970s and early 1980s. The alumni tennis event served as a pilot for plans to expand into a larger annual inter-school programme.
Several schools were represented, including Achimota School, Mfantsipim School, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls’ High School, Holy Child School, Presbyterian Boys’ School (PRESEC) Legon, and Aburi Girls’ School. Alumni from each institution competed in various divisions, fostering friendly competition, tradition, and camaraderie.
The competition not only offered a chance for spirited play on the courts but also acted as a platform to strengthen bonds among old classmates and celebrate the longstanding heritage of these schools. The OAA plans to continue hosting sporting and commemorative events over the next two years, encouraging greater involvement from alumni and youth in the lead up to the centenary festivities.
Achimota School, known for its important role in Ghana’s educational history, emphasises holistic development and active participation in sport as part of its legacy. Through events like the alumni tennis competition, the school’s values of teamwork, leadership, and physical fitness continue to be highlighted and celebrated.
