Beatrice Annan Criticises Afenyo-Markin For Haphazard Closing Remarks In Parliament
Member of Parliament Beatrice Annan has criticised Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin over what she described as “haphazard” and inappropriate closing remarks he made during a recent sitting of Parliament of Ghana. The comments were made amid heated debate on national issues, prompting Annan to call for greater decorum and responsibility among lawmakers.
Annan said that the closing remarks made by Afenyo-Markin lacked the seriousness expected in the chamber and did not reflect the dignity of Parliament. She argued that members of the legislature must uphold high standards of conduct and communicate with clarity and respect, especially when addressing matters of national importance.
According to her, the closing statements were not only disorderly but also diverted attention from the substantive issues being discussed. Annan emphasised that parliamentary debates should focus on policies and solutions rather than personal attacks or statements that can be perceived as careless or disrespectful to the institution.
The minority leader’s remarks during the session raised strong reactions from some members of Parliament, who felt that his tone was undignified. Annan urged all legislators to be mindful of their language and to contribute to debates constructively so that the public interest remains the priority.
Her comments reflect ongoing discussions about parliamentary behaviour and the need for effective communication among Ghana’s elected officials. Annan reiterated that parliamentary decorum is essential for robust democracy and that all lawmakers must respect the rules and traditions of the chamber.
In closing, she called on Afenyo-Markin to be more thoughtful and disciplined in future contributions on the parliamentary floor, adding that the people of Ghana deserve leadership that promotes unity, accountability, and respect.
