Chinese Ambassador Urges Ghana to Strengthen Resolve Against Illegal Mining

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, has called on the nation to adopt a more determined and consistent approach in tackling illegal small scale mining, commonly known as galamsey. Speaking at a workshop on responsible reporting at Peduase, he noted that while China supports Ghana’s efforts, true progress will depend on the seriousness with which the country confronts the issue.

According to the ambassador, years of environmental destruction, polluted water bodies and degraded farmlands show that the fight against galamsey has not received the sustained enforcement it requires. He explained that although China is ready to cooperate, the responsibility for ending illegal mining lies primarily with Ghanaians.

He reiterated that Chinese nationals living in Ghana must obey local laws and that any individual involved in illegal mining should face the full consequences of the law. He emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between China and Ghana to promote lawful and sustainable mining practices.

Ambassador Tong also encouraged the media to present balanced reportage and avoid attributing the misconduct of a few individuals to the broader Chinese community. He noted that many Chinese companies operating in Ghana contribute positively through legal mining, investments and community development initiatives.

Illegal mining continues to present a major environmental and economic threat to Ghana, with contaminated rivers and damaged lands highlighting the urgency of coordinated action. The ambassador’s remarks reinforce the call for a renewed national effort and stronger policies to address the long standing challenge.
