Citizenship Is A Call To Service Vice President Opoku Agyemang Tells New Ghanaians From The Diaspora
Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged newly sworn in Ghanaian citizens from the diaspora to treat their citizenship as a responsibility to serve the nation rather than merely a legal status.
Speaking at a citizenship ceremony, the Vice President encouraged the new citizens to embrace their Ghanaian identity with pride and commitment. She noted that citizenship carries a duty to contribute positively to national development and to uphold the values that define the country.
According to her, individuals who choose to become citizens of Ghana should view the decision as an opportunity to support the country’s progress through service, innovation, and community engagement. She stressed that Ghana’s growth depends not only on government action but also on the contributions of people both at home and abroad.
Professor Opoku Agyemang highlighted the important role that the Ghanaian diaspora plays in national development. She said many Ghanaians living abroad have continued to support the country through investments, knowledge sharing, and cultural connections, adding that their involvement remains crucial to Ghana’s future.
She therefore encouraged the new citizens to maintain strong ties with their communities while contributing their skills, ideas, and resources to help build a stronger nation.
The Vice President also reminded them that becoming a Ghanaian citizen means respecting the country’s laws and traditions. She advised them to uphold the values of unity, integrity, and patriotism as they integrate into Ghanaian society.
Professor Opoku Agyemang currently serves as Ghana’s Vice President under President John Dramani Mahama, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the country’s history after the 2024 general elections.
She concluded by encouraging the new citizens to see Ghana as their home and to play an active role in shaping the country’s future.
