Constitution Review Committee Proposes Five-Year Presidential Term, Rejects Third-Term Option

The Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) has recommended extending Ghana’s presidential term from four years to five years, but it has rejected any proposal to allow a third term for presidents.

The CRC presented its report to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 22, 2025. CRC Chairman Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh explained that the suggested five-year term would give governments more time to implement policies and projects effectively. However, he emphasized that the committee did not propose any change to the two-term limit for presidents.

Currently, Ghana’s Constitution limits presidents to two terms in office. Legal experts have reiterated that this limit cannot be exceeded, ensuring that no president serves beyond the constitutionally defined two terms.

The CRC’s recommendations are part of a wider constitutional review process aimed at strengthening governance and addressing structural issues in the country’s constitutional framework. Following submission, the proposals, including the five-year term recommendation, will undergo further consultation and consideration for possible legislative action in early 2026.
