Dr Ayine Speaks On Ken Ofori Atta’s Return To Ghana Amid US Court Case
Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, has addressed public concerns surrounding the possible return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta to Ghana, as legal proceedings involving him continue in the United States.
Dr Ayine explained that Ofori Atta’s situation is currently governed by an active immigration and court process in the United States, which limits the Government of Ghana’s immediate ability to secure his return. According to him, any decision regarding Ofori Atta’s movement back to Ghana must comply fully with established legal procedures in both jurisdictions.
The Attorney General noted that while the government remains interested in ensuring accountability, it is equally committed to respecting due process. He stressed that Ghana will not bypass international legal protocols, emphasizing that the rule of law remains central to how the case is being handled. Dr Ayine added that the former minister has the option to return voluntarily, provided all legal conditions are met.
Addressing speculation about extradition, Dr Ayine clarified that extradition is a formal legal process that requires clear documentation and cooperation between states. He indicated that Ghana will only pursue such a route if it becomes legally appropriate and necessary, and if all procedural requirements are satisfied.
He further assured the public that should Ofori Atta return to Ghana, he would be guaranteed his constitutional rights, including a fair trial and protection under the law. The Attorney General said the government has no interest in persecution, but rather in ensuring transparency, accountability, and justice.
Dr Ayine also touched on the issue of Ofori Atta’s visa status in the United States, stating that it was revoked rather than expired, which contributed to his current detention. He explained that this development is a key factor in the ongoing US court case and affects the timing of any possible return.
The case has continued to attract national attention due to Ofori Atta’s former role in government and the broader implications for governance and accountability in Ghana. Dr Ayine concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to lawful processes and urged the public to allow the legal system to run its course.
