Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Makes First Public Appearance After Car Crash

Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, Ghana’s Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, has made his first public appearance since surviving a serious road accident on the Bolgatanga–Tumu Road two weeks ago. His appearance took place as Parliament convened for the 2026 State of the Nation Address, signalling his return to public duties after recovery.

Mr Iddrisu was involved in a car crash earlier in February while travelling with the Deputy Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mohammed Adams Sukparu and their convoy to attend official functions in the Upper West Region. Both were reported stable following the incident and later discharged from the 37 Military Hospital, where they received treatment for injuries sustained in the collision.

The Education Minister’s first official outing since the crash saw him seated in Parliament during the address by President John Dramani Mahama, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to his ministerial responsibilities despite the setback. Observers noted that his presence was met with applause and well-wishes from fellow legislators and members of the public who were aware of his recent ordeal.

In the days after the accident, statements from the Ministry of Education confirmed that Mr Iddrisu was recovering well and had been advised by medical professionals to take time off to rest and recuperate. Supporters and constituents expressed relief at news of his recovery, with many praising his resilience and dedication to return to work.

Road accidents remain a major safety concern in Ghana, with numerous crashes reported nationwide and calls for improved infrastructure and stricter road safety enforcement. Mr Iddrisu’s experience has drawn renewed attention to the issue and sparked conversations about the importance of travel safety for public officials and civilians alike.

His return to public life after the crash marks an important milestone in his recovery journey, and members of his constituency in Northern Ghana have continued to wish him a full and swift restoration of health as he resumes his duties in government.
