First Class Degree Alone Does Not Guarantee Success, Prof Okoe Amartey Tells Students

Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey has advised students not to assume that obtaining a first class degree automatically guarantees success in life, stressing that character, discipline and practical skills are equally important.

Speaking to students during an academic engagement, the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, explained that academic excellence is valuable but it should not be seen as the only determinant of future achievement. According to him, many individuals who graduate with top honours still struggle in their careers because they lack other essential qualities required to succeed in the real world.

Professor Okoe Amartey emphasised that students must focus on developing strong personal values such as integrity, humility and perseverance alongside their academic studies. He noted that employers and society increasingly value individuals who combine knowledge with discipline, creativity and a positive attitude toward work.

He also urged students to approach education with a broader mindset rather than studying only for grades. In his view, the purpose of education is to equip individuals with skills that can help them solve problems, innovate and contribute meaningfully to society.

The professor explained that while academic achievements can open doors to opportunities, long term success often depends on how individuals apply their knowledge, interact with others and adapt to challenges in professional environments.

Professor Okoe Amartey further indicated that universities must focus not only on academic training but also on nurturing responsible and ethical leaders. He encouraged students to remain committed to continuous learning and personal development even after completing their formal education.

His remarks have sparked discussions among students and educators about the role of character and practical competence in shaping successful careers.
