Five Dead In Kwahu Trailer Crash As Driver Fights For Life
At least five people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a trailer in the Kwahu area of the Eastern Region.
The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 9, 2026, on the Kwahu Highway when a trailer loaded with bags of cement reportedly lost control and overturned while travelling toward Kotoso in the Kwahu East District.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the accident happened at around 6:14 a.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that the heavy vehicle may have suffered a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control before the trailer overturned on the road.
Five individuals believed to be assistants, commonly referred to as loading boys, who were travelling with the trailer died instantly at the scene due to the severity of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Kwahu Government Hospital, where he is said to be in critical condition.
The Public Relations Officer for the Kwahu South Municipal Fire Service, Sylvia Apoya, disclosed that the injured driver was only able to provide limited information to medical personnel because of his condition. She explained that the driver reportedly told officials it was his first time working with the assistants who lost their lives in the accident.
Authorities say they have not yet been able to determine where the cement cargo was loaded from because investigators are still awaiting a full statement from the driver.
Meanwhile, relatives from Obomeng and Mpraeso have reportedly identified the bodies of the victims. The remains have been deposited at a nearby mortuary while investigations continue into the cause of the crash.
Officials say further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
