Ghana plans first cyber and electronic warfare centre

The government has announced plans to establish Ghana’s first cyber and electronic warfare centre as part of efforts to strengthen national defence and security capabilities. President John Dramani Mahama revealed that the specialised facility will be located at the Tamale Air Force Base in the Northern Region and will play a key role in modern military operations.

According to the president, the centre will enhance Ghana’s ability to monitor its borders, protect critical infrastructure and respond swiftly to emerging security threats. The facility is expected to focus on cyber defence, electronic surveillance and secure communications, reflecting the changing nature of global and regional security challenges.

The announcement was made during a military event where the president also launched the construction of a new 2000-unit accommodation project for personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces. He further commissioned a new fleet of vehicles intended to improve mobility and operational efficiency within the military.

President Mahama explained that the cyber and electronic warfare centre would be supported with modern equipment, including strategic drones, advanced communication systems and armoured personnel carriers. These assets are expected to improve intelligence gathering and strengthen the country’s defensive readiness.

In addition to the new centre, the government plans to invest further in the armed forces by acquiring offshore patrol vessels for the navy and additional helicopters for the air force. These measures form part of a broader strategy to modernise the military and ensure it remains capable of addressing both traditional and non traditional threats.

The establishment of the centre signals Ghana’s intention to adapt its defence infrastructure to contemporary security demands and safeguard national sovereignty.
