I Do Not Want My People To Be Treated Harshly By ICE Ambassador Victor Smith Tells US Senator

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has expressed concern over the treatment of Ghanaians by US immigration authorities, particularly Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He made this known during discussions with a United States senator, stressing the need for fairness, dignity, and respect in the handling of Ghanaian nationals living in or passing through the US immigration system.

According to Ambassador Smith, while Ghana recognises the right of every country to enforce its immigration laws, such enforcement should be carried out humanely. He said his office has received reports of Ghanaians being subjected to harsh treatment during immigration enforcement processes, a situation he believes must be addressed through dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.

The ambassador explained that many young Ghanaians migrate abroad in search of better economic opportunities, often due to limited job prospects at home. He noted that these circumstances sometimes place them in vulnerable positions where they are exposed to immigration challenges and enforcement actions. As a result, he urged US authorities to consider the human impact of their actions, especially on migrants who may already be facing hardship.

Ambassador Smith also pointed to job creation as a long term solution to irregular migration. He emphasised that improving employment opportunities in Ghana would significantly reduce the number of young people who feel compelled to leave the country under risky conditions. He highlighted sectors such as agriculture, trade, and investment as key areas with the potential to absorb more young people into productive work.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to working closely with the United States to protect the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad while strengthening bilateral relations. His remarks form part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure that Ghanaians living overseas are treated with fairness and respect, regardless of their immigration status.
