New details have emerged about the microlight aircraft involved in the tragic crash at Tema Community One, revealing that the aircraft was approximately 25 years old at the time of the incident.
The aircraft, identified as a microlight with registration number 9G-ADV, crashed on March 16, 2026, while travelling from Ho in the Volta Region to Accra. Authorities confirmed that two people were on board, and both lost their lives in the crash.
Microlight aircraft, also known as ultralight aircraft, are small, lightweight planes designed for short distance travel and recreational flying. They are typically simpler in structure compared to conventional aircraft and are often used for training, aerial observation and private aviation purposes.
The aircraft involved in the Tema crash had reportedly been in operation for about 25 years. Despite its age, aviation experts note that aircraft can remain safe for use if they are properly maintained and undergo regular inspections in line with aviation standards.
According to aviation authorities, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control shortly before the crash. Witnesses in the Tema Community One area reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low and possibly attempting to stabilise before it went down.
The crash occurred near a residential area close to a daycare facility, causing panic among residents. Emergency responders, including the Ghana National Fire Service, quickly moved to the scene to contain the fire that broke out after the impact.
Fortunately, no casualties were recorded on the ground, although the proximity of the crash to homes and a childcare centre raised serious safety concerns.
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority has launched a full investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the crash. Experts are expected to examine factors such as mechanical condition, weather conditions and pilot response in the moments leading up to the accident.
The tragedy has sparked renewed discussions about aviation safety, particularly the operation of older aircraft and the need for strict maintenance and regulatory oversight.
Authorities have assured the public that findings from the investigation will guide future safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
