J. Cole Addresses His Kendrick Lamar Apology In New Freestyle

American rapper J. Cole has revisited one of the most talked about moments of his recent career in a new set of freestyles titled Birthday Blizzard ’26. The project was released as a surprise ahead of his upcoming album The Fall Off, and includes a freestyle in which he reflects on the controversial apology he once gave to fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar.

The apology dates back to 2024 when J. Cole publicly withdrew a diss track called 7 Minute Drill and offered a direct apology to Kendrick Lamar during his Dreamville Festival performance. He said at the time that the decision to apologise did not sit right with him for days and that the move disrupted his creative peace.

In the new freestyle from Birthday Blizzard ’26, Cole addresses how that apology affected his standing in the hip hop world. He raps that his decision to apologise caused him to fall out of the top three rappers in the industry, but he frames the experience as a reset rather than a defeat. He also acknowledges that critics and fans continue to debate the impact of that moment on his reputation.

The Birthday Blizzard ’26 project, which includes four freestyles and is hosted by DJ Clue, marks a reflective time for Cole as he prepares for The Fall Off release. Fans have been paying close attention to his lyrics because they offer rare insight into his thoughts on competition, legacy and his relationship to other major artists.

This latest work has sparked fresh discussion about artistic pride, the culture of rivalry in hip hop, and how personal choices can shift a performer’s place in the public eye.
