Peace Watch Ghana Challenges MPs Over Calls For Ayawaso East Primary Annulment
Peace Watch Ghana has publicly criticised a group of Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress for demanding the annulment of the party’s parliamentary primary results in the Ayawaso East Constituency. The organisation says the MPs should “lead by example” and resign their own parliamentary seats before seeking to invalidate the election results of others.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the executive director Nyonkopa Daniels said it is contradictory for lawmakers to call for a cancellation when they themselves continue to benefit from their own electoral victories. The group emphasised that such positions undermine public confidence in democratic processes and weaken the rule of law.
The MPs had called for the annulment of the Ayawaso East primary held on February 7, citing alleged irregularities including claims of vote-buying and procedural breaches. The Majority Caucus of Parliament, led by Mahama Ayariga, publicly backed this demand, urging the party’s leadership to take corrective action.
Peace Watch Ghana’s challenge comes amid intensified debate within the party and among civil society over how to handle the fallout from disputed primaries. Critics of the annulment push argue that internal party mechanisms should be respected and that any grievances ought to be resolved through established channels rather than public pressure.
The group also warned that reversing the primary results without clear evidence and due process could set a negative precedent for internal democracy and fuel further mistrust among party supporters and the wider electorate.
As the controversy unfolds, both supporters of the annulment call and its critics are urging calm and adherence to constitutional and party-level guidelines to preserve peace, unity, and democratic integrity ahead of upcoming elections.
