Kpandai MP Returns To Parliament After Supreme Court Ruling
The Member of Parliament for the Kpandai Constituency, Mathew Nyindam, has returned to Parliament after a Supreme Court decision cleared his seat and overturned an earlier High Court judgment that had removed him from office. He resumed his duties on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as Parliament resumed sittings for the second session.
Mr Nyindam’s return follows a ruling by the Supreme Court on January 28, which set aside a Tamale High Court decision that had annulled his election and ordered a rerun of the December 2024 parliamentary polls in Kpandai. The apex court ruled in a 4–1 decision that the High Court acted beyond its jurisdiction in nullifying the election.
The Supreme Court’s judgement effectively halted plans for a rerun election and legally reinstated Mr Nyindam as the duly elected representative for the constituency in the Northern Region. The majority decision by the court was delivered by Justices Yonny Kulendi, Amadu Tanko, Samuel Asiedu and Henry Kwofie, while Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang dissented.
During his first sitting after reinstatement, Mr Nyindam joined fellow lawmakers in recognising the contributions of the late MP for Ayawaso East, Nasser Toure Mahama. He described the late lawmaker as a unifying figure who rose above strict party lines and worked for all Ghanaians.
The legal contest over the Kpandai seat began after the High Court’s ruling in November 2025, which had annulled Mr Nyindam’s election and declared the seat vacant. That decision had prompted procedural steps toward organising a fresh poll before the Supreme Court intervened.
Supporters of Mr Nyindam have welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, seeing it as a reinforcement of electoral finality and respect for proper legal procedure. Critics of the earlier High Court ruling said overturning it strengthens citizens’ trust in democratic institutions.
