Singer and flutist Lizzo has revealed that she remained a virgin until winning her first Grammy Award, a personal promise she made to herself when she was younger. The four-time Grammy winner made the disclosure during a recent appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast hosted by Benny Blanco and Lil Dicky.
Lizzo, who won her first Grammy in 2020 for Best Urban Contemporary Album for her work “Cuz I Love You,” described herself as a “late bloomer” during the conversation. “Isn’t that crazy? I wasn’t even thinking about it. For me, I just promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy,” she explained. When asked by Lil Dicky whether she would have stuck to the promise if she had never won a Grammy, she responded, “Who knows?”
The singer also opened up about other milestones in her personal life, including her first kiss at age 21. She recalled that as teenagers at her church, she and her friends made a pact to abstain from any physical intimacy before marriage. “And then, I was just so scared. No one wanted to kiss me,” she said. When her first kiss eventually happened on New Year’s Eve, she described the experience as disappointing. “It was terrible. It was a New Year’s Eve thing and he, like, forced it on me. I was really mad and I was like, ‘My first kiss is ruined!'”
Following her Grammy success, Lizzo said she noticed a significant shift in attention from men, particularly hip-hop artists who began sending her direct messages on social media. She admitted to being initially confused by the sudden interest, attributing it to her experiences growing up as a plus-sized woman in an environment where she felt invisible. “Mind you, I grew up a big girl and I grew up like, guys didn’t like me like that. Where I grew up, if you were fat, you were ugly, which, that’s not true. Fat doesn’t equal ugly, but where I grew up, that’s what it was. So, I was kind of invisible to all the guys,” she said.
She recalled that only one guy expressed interest in her during high school, but he was ashamed and passed her notes suggesting secret meetings. Lizzo said she refused his advances. When the DMs started arriving after her Grammy win, she said she was oblivious to the intentions behind them. “I was like, ‘I don’t even know what this person’s intention is. I thought it was all friendly.’ People had to tell me, ‘Hey, no. This person is trying to f— you.’ I was like, ‘What?’ I’m so oblivious,” she said. Lizzo has won four Grammy Awards throughout her career and remains one of the most prominent figures in contemporary popular music.
