Meet Mumuni Bawumia The Influential Father Of Dr Bawumia Who Shaped Northern Ghana’s Political Voice

Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, father of Ghanaian politician Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, played a key role in shaping the political voice of Northern Ghana in the years leading up to and after independence. His contributions to national politics and regional representation helped lay the foundation for future leaders from the North.

Born into a family with roots in the Mamprugu royal tradition, Mumuni Bawumia was a teacher, lawyer and respected politician who entered public service early in his career. He served at various levels of government, from local body leadership to national roles, earning recognition for his work across successive administrations.

Mumuni Bawumia became prominent in the politics of the then Northern Territories, where he represented his people and worked to ensure their concerns were heard in the broader governance of the country. He was a founding member of the Northern People’s Party, formed in the 1950s to advocate for development and political representation for northern communities. The party later joined with others to become the United Party, a major opposition tradition in Ghana’s political history.

In addition to his political work, Mumuni Bawumia held traditional leadership positions and was the paramount chief of Kperiga in what is now the North East Region. His influence extended beyond politics into customary leadership, where he was respected as a voice for progress and unity.

He also served Ghana in diplomatic and advisory capacities, including as Chairman of the Council of State during the Fourth Republic, where he helped guide governance at the national level. His leadership earned him national honours for his service to the country.

Mumuni Bawumia’s legacy lives on in the contributions of his son, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who has become one of Ghana’s most prominent public figures, serving as Vice-President of Ghana and carrying forward a long family tradition of public service rooted in representing northern voices in national affairs.
