Minority Urges Mahama To Resist Pressure For A Third Term
The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has issued a strong warning to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him not to let supporters or party members pressure him into seeking a third presidential term. Lawmakers representing the opposition believe that any attempt to extend his stay in power beyond the constitutionally defined period would undermine democratic principles and the rule of law.
According to the Minority, there are growing conversations and calls from within some political circles and grassroots groups about a possible third term for President Mahama, but they insist he should resist such calls. They argue that yielding to temptation could tarnish his legacy and create political instability in the country.
Members of the Minority have reminded the president that the Ghanaian Constitution strictly limits the presidency to two terms. They stressed that respecting this provision is crucial for maintaining trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions and setting a positive example for future leaders.
Comments from the Minority also reflect broader concerns about political ambition overtaking constitutional safeguards. They highlighted that leaders should prioritize national interest over personal or partisan gain and uphold the democratic framework that has governed Ghana’s transfers of power.
The warning from the Minority comes amid heightened political debates in Parliament and across public discourse about leadership succession and respect for constitutional term limits, especially following the 2024 general election cycle where President Mahama returned to office.
