Mr Eazi Says He Coined the Phrase “Detty December”

Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Mr Eazi has claimed that he is the originator of the popular phrase “Detty December,” widely used to describe festive celebrations at the end of the year. He shared this during his recent Detty Rave concert in Accra.

According to Mr Eazi, the idea for the phrase came about in 2016 when he was working as a show promoter in Ghana. He and his friends suggested the name “Detty December” to capture the excitement, fun, and energy of holiday celebrations.

He noted that the phrase has grown beyond his own use and is now embraced widely across West Africa. “Detty December is bigger than Mr Eazi. It’s bigger than anybody. Detty December is for all of us,” he said, highlighting its cultural impact.

The term has since become synonymous with end-of-year festivities, social gatherings, music events, and parties, particularly among young people who return home during December to celebrate with family and friends.

Mr Eazi’s claim has faced some debate, as a Nigerian entrepreneur secured a trademark for “Detty December” in 2019. Despite this, he emphasised that the phrase now belongs to the community and represents a shared cultural celebration rather than an individual brand.
