Veteran Musician Sloopy Mike Accuses Kuami Eugene Of Using His Song Without Permission
Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician Sloopy Mike Gyamfi has accused popular singer Kuami Eugene of using one of his songs without first seeking his approval.
Speaking during an interview on a radio programme, the highlife legend claimed that the award winning artiste performed a version of his classic song titled “Asem Kakra” without contacting him beforehand to request permission.
According to Sloopy Mike, he discovered that Kuami Eugene had performed the song after seeing videos of the performance circulating online. He explained that the young singer delivered the song well and even added his own lyrics to it, but he was not consulted before the rendition was made public.
The veteran musician indicated that he would have appreciated it if the singer had approached him first before performing or adapting the song. He said that although he admired the performance, professional courtesy required that permission should have been sought.
Despite raising concerns about the issue, Sloopy Mike said he does not hold any grudge against the musician. He described Kuami Eugene as someone he sees as a son and suggested that the act may have been done out of admiration for his music.
He added that he would even welcome the opportunity to meet Kuami Eugene in person one day and have a conversation about the song.
Kuami Eugene, whose real name is Eugene Kwame Marfo, is a well known Ghanaian highlife and afro pop artiste who rose to fame after participating in the MTN Hitmaker competition and later winning several major music awards in Ghana.
The allegation has sparked conversations among music fans on social media, with some people arguing that the performance could simply be a cover or tribute rather than a case of song theft.
The issue has once again brought attention to ongoing debates within the Ghanaian music industry about music sampling, copyright permissions, and respect for veteran musicians.
