Otto Addo ‘better suited for junior teams’, says Sonnie Badu after Black Stars sack

Gospel singer Sonnie Badu has said that Otto Addo, who was sacked as Ghana head coach this week, may be better suited to managing one of the country’s junior national teams.

The Ghana Football Association dismissed Addo on Monday following back-to-back friendly defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.

Ghana lost 2-1 to Germany on Sunday in their final warm-up match before the 2026 World Cup.

Writing on Instagram after the Germany defeat, Badu said he had seen “some hope” in Addo’s performance but ultimately felt the senior national team role was too big for him.

“After last night’s match, I gained some hope in Otto, but I think the senior national team was too big a responsibility for him,” he said.

“Maybe he’d be a better fit for one of the junior national teams.”

Calls for Kwesi Appiah

The singer then turned his attention to finding a replacement for Addo, proposing former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah as the ideal candidate.

Appiah, who previously managed Ghana between 2012 and 2014 and again from 2017 to 2020, currently coaches the Sudan national team.

“I think Kwesi Appiah would be the perfect choice. He knows all the players, has tons of experience, and can lead the team effectively,” Badu wrote.

He argued that bringing in a foreign coach would be risky given the limited time before the World Cup.

“A foreign coach would need time, which we don’t have right now. We can’t risk having them lose and then say they didn’t have enough time with the players,” he said.

“Let’s get Kwesi Appiah, even if it’s just for the World Cup.”

Addo’s dismissal

Otto Addo, a former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach, was dismissed on Monday after two separate spells in charge of the Black Stars.

He first took over on an interim basis in 2022, guiding Ghana to the World Cup in Qatar, before returning for a second stint in 2024.

The back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany proved to be his final matches at the helm.

The Ghana Football Association has yet to announce a successor, with the World Cup scheduled to take place later this year.
