Police Deploy Special Security Team To Geniyiri After Community Clashes
The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special police team to Geniyiri in the Savannah Region following reprisal attacks that recently occurred in the community.
The decision was announced in a statement from the regional police headquarters in Damongo. According to the police, the deployment follows violent clashes involving some Birifor residents and members of the Fulani community in the area.
The special team is made up of intelligence officers and investigators who have been tasked to assist the Savannah Regional Police Command in strengthening security operations in the town. Their mission includes gathering intelligence, investigating the incidents, and identifying individuals responsible for the attacks.
Authorities say the operation is aimed at restoring stability in the community and ensuring that those involved in the violence are apprehended and prosecuted.
Police have indicated that the security presence in Geniyiri has already been intensified and that calm has largely been restored. However, investigations are ongoing to track down suspects connected to the attacks.
Residents of the area have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with the police as efforts continue to maintain peace and prevent further violence.
The latest incident comes amid longstanding tensions in parts of the Savannah Region. In February 2026, the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, received the final report of the Geniyiri Mediation Committee. The committee had been established in September 2025 to address recurring disputes and promote peaceful coexistence among communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba area.
Authorities say they remain committed to ensuring lasting peace in the region through dialogue, mediation, and strengthened security presence.
