Former Kumasi MCE Warns Against Downgrading Suame Interchange, Says It Will Sideline Kumasi
A former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kumasi has called on government authorities not to downgrade the planned Suame Interchange project, arguing that doing so would sideline Kumasi and slow economic progress in the Ashanti regional capital. (ghanaweb.com

The former MCE, Mr. Stephen Osei Mensah, who is now affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said the Suame Interchange remains a vital transport infrastructure project for Kumasi and the surrounding communities. He made the remarks during a press briefing in Kumasi where he stressed that it should be implemented as originally planned.
Mr. Mensah warned that scaling down the design or scope of the interchange could limit its ability to improve traffic flow, ease congestion, and promote business activities in the region. He said the project is not just about building a road but about enabling trade, jobs, and investment in one of Ghana’s largest cities.
According to the former MCE, Kumasi, as a major commercial hub, needs infrastructure that matches its status and potential. He said downgrading the interchange would send the wrong message about the government’s commitment to regional development and could discourage investors looking for reliable logistics and transport systems.
Mr. Mensah appealed to political leaders from all sides to consider the long-term benefits of completing the project in full, arguing that a robust interchange would reduce travel time, cut transportation costs, and improve access to markets for traders and farmers.
The Suame Interchange has been discussed in recent months as part of national infrastructure planning, with government officials at times reviewing its specifications to align with budget priorities. Critics of any changes say that the city’s growth and urban dynamics demand a fully developed interchange to handle current and future traffic volumes.
