Kennedy Agyapong’s Camp Rejects Claims He Is Breaking Away From NPP

The campaign team of Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a presidential aspirant within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has dismissed rumours that he plans to quit the party or form a new political movement. Sources close to his campaign described the speculation as baseless and unfounded, stressing that Agyapong remains committed to the NPP.

The controversy began after Agyapong was absent from a recent NPP thanksgiving service attended by senior party members, triggering online claims that his absence signalled a move to break away and create a separate political group. Some social media posts even suggested the possible formation of a new movement known as “The Base.”

However, Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for Agyapong’s campaign team, strongly rejected those claims in an interview, calling them “completely untenable” and stating that missing one party event does not indicate disloyalty or a desire to launch a rival party. He pointed out that several other top party figures, including former presidents and senior leaders, were also not present at the event without prompting similar speculation.

Another aide, George Sarpong, reiterated that Agyapong continues to identify strongly with the NPP and has “sacrificed much” for the party over the years. He quoted Agyapong asserting that he considers himself a “proper party man” who will remain loyal and not establish a new political organisation.

Kwarteng also explained that Agyapong’s absence from the thanksgiving gathering was due to both him and his campaign team being out of town, emphasizing that such absences are normal and do not reflect political intentions or a rift with the party.

The denials aim to calm speculation ahead of future party activities and the run-up to the 2028 general elections, reaffirming Agyapong’s ongoing involvement within the NPP.
