IGP Pledges Justice After Arrests in Ohwim Robbery and Murder Case
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has pledged that those responsible for the robbery and killing of Andrews Amankwa in Ohwim-Amanfrom near Kumasi will face justice following recent police arrests.
The police launched intensive investigations after the February 10, 2026 incident in which Mr. Amankwa was shot during a robbery at Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi, and his Toyota Hilux vehicle was stolen. He later died while receiving treatment at a medical facility.
In a series of intelligence-led operations across Kumasi between February 18 and February 22, security forces arrested four suspects connected to the crime:
• Akwasi Manu, who was first taken into custody on February 18 after being found with a mobile phone belonging to the deceased.
• Bashiru Tanko, arrested at Atonsu High School Junction on February 19.
• Kojo Amponsah, picked up at the Hwireso area on February 21.
• Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, arrested at Danyame near the military barracks on February 22.
During the operations, an alleged gang leader, Eric Antwi Duku, was wounded and later died from his injuries at a hospital. Police believe the group was involved in organised car-jacking and other violent crimes in the Ashanti Region.
The IGP said the Ghana Police Service will pursue investigations to ensure that those involved in the robbery-murder are brought before court and held accountable. He emphasised the police are determined to dismantle dangerous criminal syndicates and protect the public.
