SHS Students Are Being Pampered, Argues Rashid Tanko Computer
Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, has argued that Senior High School students in Ghana are being overly pampered, a situation he believes is contributing to declining discipline in schools.
Speaking during a media engagement, he expressed concern that many students are growing up without firm guidance either at home or within the educational system. According to him, the increasing focus on student comfort and welfare, while important, should not come at the expense of discipline, accountability, and respect for authority.
He suggested that some of the recent incidents of misconduct in secondary schools reflect a broader cultural shift where young people are not being held responsible for their actions. In his view, discipline plays a critical role in shaping character, strengthening academic performance, and preparing students for adulthood. Without it, he warned, schools may struggle to maintain order and uphold standards.
Dr. Tanko Computer clarified that he is not opposed to policies that support students through improved facilities, feeding programs, or financial assistance. However, he stressed that these interventions must be balanced with clear rules and consistent enforcement. He believes both parents and school authorities share responsibility for instilling strong values in young people.
His comments have sparked debate among education stakeholders and the general public. While some agree that stricter discipline is necessary to curb rising indiscipline, others argue that the challenges facing schools are more complex and cannot be blamed solely on students. They point to broader social and economic pressures that may also influence student behavior.
The discussion continues as policymakers and educators explore ways to strengthen discipline while protecting student rights and promoting a safe learning environment
