Patapaa Explains Why He Held A Polythene Bag Of Cash Donations At His Mother’s Funeral

Ghanaian musician Patapaa Amisty has addressed the viral pictures of himself holding a polythene bag filled with cash donations during his late mother’s funeral.

In a recent interview, Patapaa explained that the unusual sight was not meant to attract attention or disrespect his mother’s memory. Instead, he said the bag was used as a practical way to collect donations from mourners who wanted to support the family during the funeral rites.

According to the singer, funeral traditions in many Ghanaian communities often include friends, relatives, and well‑wishers contributing money to assist with funeral expenses. However, Patapaa said this time the donations were collected in a way that caught people’s eyes and sparked online discussion.

He added that the polythene bag was simply a temporary container that made it easy to gather contributions from attendees, and that the cash would later be safely stored and used to help cover funeral costs. Patapaa emphasised that there was no intention to show off or belittle the solemnity of the occasion.

The musician also shared that the funeral, which took place earlier this week, included traditional rites and a large turnout of friends and family. He said attendees were generous, and their support uplifted the grieving family during a difficult time.

Patapaa’s explanation has drawn mixed reactions online, with some social media users defending his actions as culturally rooted and practical, while others questioned the choice of using a polythene bag in that context. Many, however, reiterated that cultural practices around funerals can vary widely and that intentions matter more than appearance.

The artist appealed for understanding and respect during the family’s mourning period, saying he hopes the focus remains on honouring his mother’s life and legacy rather than on the viral images.
