Afenyo-Markin Urges Government To Focus On Development Instead Of Political Slogans

Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has publicly urged the government to prioritise tangible development and job creation rather than relying on political slogans to attract public support.

Speaking at an event organised by the Young Commons Forum at the University of Cape Coast on February 21, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin criticised the government’s recent approach to governance. He said that slogans like the 24-Hour Economy have been emphasised more than real actions that improve livelihoods and expand opportunities for Ghanaians, particularly the youth.

He highlighted that several key campaign promises, including the establishment of the Women’s Bank and the full implementation of the 24-Hour Economy policy, had not yet been fulfilled. According to him, these unmet pledges have left many citizens disappointed and struggling with everyday challenges such as unemployment and the rising cost of living.

Mr Afenyo-Markin encouraged the government to shift its focus from political messaging to practical solutions that address core socio-economic issues like job creation, income stability, and national development. He emphasised that young people want real progress that improves their lives rather than talk and slogans that do not translate into results.

He also advised young leaders attending the forum to stay engaged in civic matters and work towards policies that bring meaningful change to society.
