Police Service Promotes Over 12 000 Officers In Major Career Advancement Push

The Ghana Police Service has promoted a total of 12 802 police officers, clearing a longstanding backlog of promotions that had built up over several years. The sweeping promotions, covering ranks from Lance Corporals to Chief Inspectors, were processed between January and the first week of February 2026.

The upgrade in ranks, which had been pending for many officers for between five to ten years, was carried out in line with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (Constitutional Instrument 76). These rules guide promotions based on examination performance, seniority, years of service, satisfactory evaluations, and, in some cases, special recommendations for meritorious service.

According to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Secretariat, the promotions were not arbitrary. Police commands across all 25 police regions in Ghana submitted the names of officers due for elevation, and these submissions were reviewed before promotions were approved to ensure fairness and compliance with regulations.

Most of the newly promoted officers — roughly 11 900 — were advancing by one rank as part of the normal progression cycle. The remaining promotions, totalling about 600, were awarded based on special recommendations recognizing exceptional performance, courage, or valuable contributions to policing efforts.

The Secretariat also addressed a number of petitions from personnel who felt they had been unfairly treated or whose promotions had been delayed. Investigations into these cases resulted in corrections and promotions being granted to eligible officers, including some who had been wrongly interdicted or whose promotion dates needed adjustment.

In addition, the Police Service granted posthumous promotions to some officers who died in the line of duty, acknowledging their sacrifice and service to the nation.

IGP Christian Tetteh Yohunu and senior officials emphasised that the promotions aim to motivate personnel, reward dedication, and properly align career progression across the service. They said the move is part of broader efforts to strengthen morale and efficiency within the Ghana Police Service.
