Tarkwa Court Sentences Porter To 18 Months For Stealing GH¢3,500
A porter has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour by the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court after he was found guilty of stealing GH¢3,500 belonging to a trader.
The convict, identified as Eric Essuman, also known as Nzema, was prosecuted after investigations established that he unlawfully took the money while working in Tarkwa in the Western Region. According to court proceedings, the complainant, a trader operating in the area, had entrusted the porter with responsibilities related to his business activities.
However, the court heard that Essuman took advantage of the trust reposed in him and dishonestly appropriated the GH¢3,500 for his personal use. The trader later detected that the money was missing and reported the matter to the police. Following investigations, the accused was arrested and charged with stealing.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence to support the charge. The court found him guilty and handed down an 18-month custodial sentence with hard labour. The presiding magistrate noted that such offences undermine trust in commercial transactions and must be dealt with firmly to serve as a deterrent.
The ruling has been welcomed by members of the trading community, who say the decision reinforces confidence in the justice system and sends a strong message against theft.
