Ghanaians Can Be Proud Of A President Who Respects Judicial Independence
Acting Director of Elections and Information Technology for the National Democratic Congress, Mahdi Gibril, has stated that Ghanaians now have reason to be proud of a president who does not interfere in the work of the judiciary. According to him, the current administration has demonstrated a clear commitment to upholding the constitutional principle of separation of powers, which is fundamental to Ghana’s democracy.
Mr Gibril made the remarks while addressing ongoing public discussions about the relationship between the executive and the judiciary. He explained that in any functioning democracy, the independence of the judiciary must be protected at all times. He noted that when a president refrains from influencing court proceedings or judicial decisions, it strengthens public trust in the justice system and reinforces democratic governance.
He further argued that past concerns about executive interference in state institutions have made Ghanaians more sensitive to issues of judicial independence. For that reason, he believes it is important to acknowledge leadership that allows the courts to operate freely without political pressure. According to him, respecting the autonomy of the judiciary ensures fairness, transparency, and accountability in national affairs.
Mr Gibril also called on political actors to avoid politicising matters concerning the judiciary. He urged citizens to focus on strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national unity rather than engaging in partisan attacks. In his view, a president who respects institutional boundaries sets a positive example for public officials and contributes to long term political stability.
He concluded by encouraging Ghanaians to remain vigilant in defending democratic principles while supporting efforts that protect the independence of state institutions.
