PNC Chairman Cautions Interior Minister Against Rushed Security Recruitment Decisions
The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention, Samson Asaki Awingobit, has cautioned the Minister for the Interior to avoid making rushed decisions regarding recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
According to him, decisions concerning the recruitment of personnel into security agencies must be carefully handled to protect the integrity and professionalism of the country’s security institutions. He warned that any rushed process could undermine public confidence and create challenges within the security sector.
Awingobit stressed that recruitment into the security services should be conducted with transparency and fairness. In his view, the process must follow proper procedures to ensure that qualified individuals are selected based on merit rather than political influence or pressure.
He explained that the security sector plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order, and therefore decisions related to staffing must be guided by national interest rather than urgency or political considerations. According to him, careful planning and adherence to established systems will help maintain the credibility of the recruitment process.
The PNC chairman also noted that concerns about security recruitment have generated significant public debate, making it even more important for authorities to handle the process cautiously and responsibly.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about recruitment into various security agencies, including the police, immigration, fire service and prisons service. Authorities have been working to manage the large number of applications submitted by young people seeking opportunities to serve in the country’s security institutions.
Awingobit urged government officials to prioritise transparency and due process in all recruitment exercises to ensure fairness for applicants and maintain the credibility of Ghana’s security services.
