U.S. Court Jails 21 Year Old Ghanaian For Snapchat Sextortion Scheme Involving $200 Demand
A United States federal court has sentenced a 21 year old Ghanaian national following his conviction in a Snapchat related sextortion case. The ruling brings closure to a matter that highlighted the growing misuse of social media platforms for criminal activities involving threats and online extortion.
According to court records, the young man was found guilty of accessing another individual’s Snapchat account without authorization and obtaining private images stored on the platform. Prosecutors explained that after gaining access, he contacted the victim and demanded a payment of two hundred dollars. The demand was accompanied by threats to share the private images with the victim’s family members and contacts if the money was not sent.
The victim initially attempted to make the payment through a mobile money transfer platform but later canceled the transaction. Despite this, some of the images were reportedly shared, prompting law enforcement involvement. Investigations later traced the activity to the Ghanaian suspect, leading to his arrest and prosecution in the United States.
The presiding judge sentenced the accused to time already served, which amounted to several months in custody. Following the sentence, he was transferred to immigration authorities for further proceedings related to his stay in the United States.
Law enforcement officials noted that the case serves as a warning about the serious legal consequences of online extortion and the abuse of digital platforms. Authorities continue to encourage social media users to protect their accounts and report suspicious activity promptly.
The conviction also underscores international cooperation in addressing cybercrime, particularly offenses that cross borders and target individuals through online platforms.
