We Brought Our IGP So NDC Supporters Will Not Be Treated Unfairly, Says Asiedu Nketiah

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has defended the appointment of the current Inspector General of Police, stating that the decision was necessary to ensure fairness within the security services.

Speaking about the ongoing debate surrounding recruitment into the police service, Asiedu Nketiah argued that leadership within the security sector must treat all citizens equally regardless of their political affiliation. According to him, the government wants to prevent situations where members of a particular political party feel they are being targeted or treated unfairly.

He stated that the presence of a trusted police leadership helps ensure that individuals who support the National Democratic Congress will not suffer selective treatment during recruitment or security operations. In his view, law enforcement institutions must operate professionally and without political bias.

Asiedu Nketiah’s comments come amid the ongoing discussion about the large number of young people applying for recruitment into Ghana’s security services. Reports indicate that nearly 500,000 applicants expressed interest in joining the police service, a figure that far exceeds the number of available positions.

According to him, the situation highlights the level of unemployment among young people and the intense competition for government jobs. He explained that although many applicants may be qualified, the state’s financial capacity only allows a limited number of recruits to be admitted each year.

He added that government decisions regarding recruitment must be guided by available resources and national priorities. Authorities, he noted, must balance the need to strengthen security institutions with the financial responsibility of paying and training personnel.

The NDC chairman also stressed the importance of building public confidence in the country’s security institutions. He believes that when citizens trust the fairness of law enforcement agencies, it strengthens national unity and reduces political tension.

His remarks have generated debate among political observers and the public, particularly regarding the role of political leadership in shaping the administration of security institutions in Ghana.
