Gospel Legend Ron Kenoly Dies At 81
Renowned American gospel singer, worship leader and pastor Dr Ron Kenoly has died at the age of 81, prompting tributes from across the global Christian music community. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, by his long-time music director, Bruno Miranda, who shared the news on social media, sparking an outpouring of memories from fans and fellow worship leaders.
Ron Kenoly was widely recognised as a pioneer of modern praise and worship music whose influence shaped worship practices in churches around the world for decades. He rose to international prominence in the early 1990s with the release of his live album Lift Him Up, which became one of the most successful worship albums of its time. Songs such as Ancient of Days, Jesus Is Alive and We’re Going Up became staples in many congregations and are still sung in worship services globally.
Born on December 6, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas in the United States, Kenoly began his music journey after serving in the United States Air Force. He eventually dedicated his life to Christian worship and ministry, serving as a worship leader at Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California, and travelling to lead worship events, conferences and concerts across continents.
Throughout his career, Kenoly released numerous albums that blended traditional gospel with contemporary worship sounds. His recordings were known for their joyful and powerful arrangements that encouraged active participation from congregations. His work earned him recognition as one of the influential voices in praise and worship music.
Miranda’s tribute highlighted Kenoly’s dedication to leading worship rather than performing, saying that he understood worship as a calling beyond entertainment. The cause of his death has not been publicly revealed. Kenoly’s legacy lives on through his music and the many worship leaders and believers he inspired throughout his lifetime.
