Bongo DCE Joseph Abaa Akaseke Dies After Short Illness

The Bongo District in the Upper East Region of Ghana is in mourning following the reported death of Joseph Abaa Akaseke, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area. His passing was confirmed by the Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, to local media outlets.

Mr Akaseke is reported to have died on Sunday evening, February 22, 2026, after a brief illness while receiving medical care at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. The exact cause of his illness has not been publicly disclosed.

News of his death has triggered widespread sadness among residents of the district, political colleagues, and community members across the wider Upper East Region. Many have described the loss as sudden and deeply painful.

During his time in office, Mr Akaseke was seen as a committed public servant who worked to improve basic services and infrastructure in Bongo. He collaborated with local authorities and national representatives to address key community challenges, including education, healthcare, and access to clean water.

He was appointed as the District Chief Executive in April 2025 after securing strong support from members of the district assembly, winning 52 out of 54 valid votes during his confirmation. His leadership was recognised for its focus on inclusive governance and community development.
