Burkina Faso Terrorist Attack: What We Know About The Terror Group Behind The Violence

On February 15, 2026, reports confirmed that a terror attack in northern Burkina Faso targeted a truck carrying Ghanaian tomato traders. The attack has drawn attention not only because of the tragic loss of life but also because it highlights the deeper insurgent threat posed by militant groups in the country and across the Sahel region.

Burkina Faso has been struggling with rising jihadist violence since around 2015, when militants linked to Islamist extremist networks began carrying out cross-border raids from neighbouring Mali and Niger. These groups have gradually expanded operations within Burkina Faso, contributing to a dramatic increase in attacks on civilians, soldiers, and security posts in the North and Est regions.

Two of the main terror organisations active in Burkina Faso and the wider Sahel are Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). JNIM is an al-Qaeda-linked alliance formed by the merger of several jihadist groups. It is responsible for many high-profile attacks in Mali and Burkina Faso, including assaults on military positions and towns, often using motorcycles and light weapons to launch rapid strikes.

The ISGS faction, affiliated with the Islamic State, operates mainly in the tri-border areas of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. It is known for a campaign of violent ambushes, attacks on soldiers, and at times targeting civilians. Together, these groups have been blamed for numerous deadly incidents, such as the recent Kourakou and Tondobi attacks in Séno Province, where dozens of civilians were killed in April 2023.

The persistent violence has had severe humanitarian and security effects. Thousands of people have been killed or wounded in these attacks, and large numbers of residents have been displaced from their homes, especially in northern and eastern Burkina Faso. The instability has also caused neighbouring states and international partners to increase counter-terrorism efforts to try to contain the threat.

Although the government of Burkina Faso and regional security forces have launched operations to quell the insurgency, the overall security situation remains fragile. Militants continue to exploit weak state presence in rural areas, making it difficult for authorities to fully secure the territory and protect communities.
