Oforikrom MP Says Minority MPs Did Not Abandon Afenyo-Markin During Visit

The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has dismissed claims that Minority Members of Parliament deliberately abandoned their leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, during a visit to the residence of New Patriotic Party presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Aidoo described the allegations as baseless and said the narrative suggesting internal division within the caucus was inaccurate.

The controversy arose after social media and some political commentators claimed that several MPs left Afenyo-Markin behind when the group visited Bawumia’s home following the party’s recent presidential primary elections. Critics implied that this action was due to disagreement over leadership decisions within the party.

In an interview on national television, Aidoo explained that the programme for the visit had been organised by Afenyo-Markin himself and that all MPs were aware of the plan. He said that the Minority Leader did not abandon the group, but was briefly absent at the start because he had chaired a caucus meeting and attended to other leadership duties in Parliament before joining them later at Bawumia’s residence.

The Oforikrom MP stressed that there was no misunderstanding or rift among the MPs and described as unfounded the narrative suggesting internal dissent. He urged supporters and the public to focus on unity and constructive engagement within the party instead of circulating unverified claims.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is a well-known Ghanaian politician and member of the New Patriotic Party who serves as the Minority Leader in Parliament. He has been active in national politics and played leadership roles on various committees.
