President Mahama Opens 2026 Judicial Year Of The African Court On Human And Peoples’ Rights

President John Dramani Mahama has officially opened the 2026 Judicial Year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha, Tanzania, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to human rights justice on the continent. The solemn ceremony also marked the launch of celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the continental court, which plays a key role in protecting human rights across Africa.

As Special Guest of Honour, President Mahama delivered the keynote address reflecting on the court’s progress over two decades and the importance of safeguarding human and peoples’ rights. He is the first serving Ghanaian president to be invited to address the African Union-linked court at its judicial opening — a milestone that highlights Ghana’s active engagement with regional institutions and legal frameworks.

The day’s events brought together senior judges, diplomats, and representatives from various African governments and international bodies. Discussions emphasized the need to strengthen judicial cooperation, promote accountability, and ensure the court continues to serve as a pillar for rights protection.

President Mahama also engaged in bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, reinforcing diplomatic ties between Ghana and Tanzania as both nations work toward shared goals on governance and human rights.

The ceremony’s theme, “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa,” highlighted landmark cases and the role of the African Court in advancing justice across the continent. President Mahama’s presence and participation reaffirm Ghana’s dedication to justice, human dignity, and stronger judicial institutions in Africa.
