Freddie Blay Remanded In Custody Over Kitase Land Dispute

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, has been remanded in police custody by the Akropong Circuit Court following his arrest in connection with a land dispute at Kitase in the Eastern Region.

The veteran lawyer and politician was taken into custody on March 16, 2026, after police executed an arrest warrant that had reportedly been outstanding for several months.

The case is linked to allegations that Blay ordered the demolition of a building under construction on a disputed piece of land. A complainant reportedly filed a case claiming unlawful destruction of property, which triggered police investigations and subsequent legal action.

According to prosecutors, Blay was earlier invited to assist with investigations but allegedly failed to honour the invitation. He was also said to have missed a scheduled court appearance in 2025, leading to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.

Following his arrest, he was arraigned before the Akropong Circuit Court, where the judge ordered that he be remanded in custody while investigations continue. He is expected to reappear before the court on April 9, 2026.

However, sources close to the former NPP chairman have disputed aspects of the allegations. They claim the matter is a civil land dispute dating back several years and insist that Blay did not order the demolition of any structure. According to them, he only authorised the clearing of a vacant plot for safety reasons.

His legal team has also indicated plans to challenge the remand order at a higher court, arguing that the decision is unjustified under the circumstances.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to Blay’s prominence in Ghanaian politics, with many observers closely following developments as the legal process continues.
