Anti-Asamoah Says Bawumia Should Keep NAPO As Running Mate For Consistency

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) official has urged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to retain Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as his running mate ahead of upcoming elections, saying continuity would benefit the party’s unity and electoral prospects.

Akwasi Anti-Asamoah, who previously served as Fomena Constituency Chairman for the NPP, made the appeal during a media appearance, stressing that the party should not change its vice-presidential candidate. He compared the situation to how Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo retained Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate across three election cycles before winning, arguing that similar consistency could strengthen the NPP’s campaign strategy.

Anti-Asamoah maintained that Dr. Opoku Prempeh has already been introduced to the public and invested in by the party, making it unnecessary to alter the ticket at this stage. He said changing the running mate could undermine the party’s message of stability and confidence.

Defending Dr. Opoku Prempeh against critics, the former constituency chairman described him as a capable partner for Dr. Bawumia, dismissing assertions that his communication skills are inadequate. He said that with time, the vice-presidential candidate can grow into the role and become an asset to the party’s overall campaign.

Anti-Asamoah’s comments come amid ongoing discussions within the NPP about its strategy and leadership lineup ahead of the next general election.
