President Mahama Reveals That Government Will Not Use Public Funds for World Cup Supporters
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Government of Ghana will not use public funds to sponsor Ghanaian supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reaffirming the state’s commitment to financial prudence and adherence to earlier policy recommendations. His statement was made at the launch of a national World Cup fundraising campaign in Accra on March 20, 2026.
Mahama explained that providing public money to send fans abroad would place a heavy financial strain on the national budget. He noted that even a modest effort to support a limited group of supporters, such as transporting and accommodating as few as 200 people, could cost nearly $2 million, an amount he said was too high given other pressing national needs.
The decision aligns with the recommendations of the Dzamefe Commission Report, which discourages government sponsorship of fan travel to international sporting events, instead urging private sector involvement and community‑led fundraising. The president emphasised that government resources should be prioritised for urgent services like job creation, healthcare, education and infrastructure, rather than financing overseas travel for supporters.
In response to the government’s stance, the fundraising initiative has called on private companies, individuals and celebrities to help mobilise funds that will enable Ghanaian football fans to attend the World Cup. Early reports indicate that several prominent groups and figures are already contributing to the cause through donations and sponsorships.
Ghana has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be co‑hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, making the issue of fan support an important topic among supporters and stakeholders. The president’s position makes it clear that public funding will not be diverted for fan travel, underscoring a broader government focus on economic responsibility, especially in light of competing national priorities.
